World Peace Organizations – Where Is the Solution?

Out for a stroll one evening, a young woman named Judy came across a drunk named Harry who was relentlessly searching the ground under a street light. “Did you lose something?” Judy inquired. “My keys,” Harry mumbled. Judy, being a kind spirited sort, began to assist in the search.
As others came across the scene they too joined in and within a short period of time a small crowd had gathered all fervently invested in finding Harry’s keys.
After some time, and frustrated by the lack of success, Judy turned to Harry and asked, “Are you sure you lost them here?” “No,” Harry responded as he pointed off into the darkness, “I lost them over, but the light is better here.”

The point of the story is simple: Many of the world’s people have been searching for peace, but I often wonder if we have been looking in the right spot?

The other day I went to a gathering of peace organizations where I heard, once again, all about the insanity of war. Listening to the problem, over and over, is a little like helping Harry look for his keys. As I listened to the intellectual and logical arguments regarding the insanity of war and the glory of peace what I’ve known that for the past fifty years was simply confirmed: War is insane. So now what?

As we broaden our search I ask you to consider how a group of men, representing the moral conscience of a nation, can knowingly lie to the world and kill thousands of innocent women and children simply to get what they want. How can these men impose economic sanctions which directly result in the deaths of 500,000 children? Is there not something incredibly wrong in the souls of men who knowingly behave in such a manner? How can anyone even consider the possibility that there exists a logical argument which supports such behavior? The lies, the selfishness, the deceit, the secrets, and the total disregard for the well-being of others are all, coincidentally, symptoms of the disease of addiction. And there is no logical understanding in the world of addiction! It is a spiritual malady.

War, like all addictions, is by its very nature insane and is fueled by fear, greed, and the desire for power. And like all addictions it is centered in man’s ego and it defies logic. The fact that Harry gets drunk and repeatedly beats his wife, is as insane as America’s need to kill thousands of innocent people. When frothy, logical appeals are incapable of getting Harry to stop drinking, why would they work on the perpetrators of war?

Can you see the disease here? Can you see the dysfunction? Perhaps, if caught in a moment of clarity, Harry may admit to being a drunk. But then what? Where does he go from here? The people of this world are not stupid. They see the insanity of America’s wars for profit. They see the addiction and the fear, greed, and the desire for power behind America’s foreign policy. Where is the solution? Isn’t it obvious we’ve been looking in the wrong spot?

It is there. You have a choice.

A hint: Ask Harry! He found his keys! There is a solution.
